    WORLD CLASS TRAINING
IS OFFERED IN A VARIETY OF SPORTS

76 gold, silver and bronze medals in Olympic Games,
    World and European Championships
Makelanrinne is a non-graded senior high school.  It was the first day school in Finland to start experimenting with the non-graded system.  Started in 1972, the system aims to offer students greater freedom in planing their individual study programs and schedules.   Students determine the total length of their high school studies, as well as their daily schedules.  In this way they are able to plan their studies to mee ttheir individual needs and accommodate sports schedules.  On average, students complete their high school requirements in three years.

The non-graded system has fostered an atmosphere that seems oddly relaxed in a school that thrives on competition.  The open academic program (reflected in the wide open spaces of the school's architecture) and the somewhat informal relationship between faculty members and the student body place an extra challenge of self-motivation on every student.  In the non-graded system students must be consciously pro-active and more responsible in meeting their academic requirements.

    Thanks

Thank you Seppo Pitkanen for your enthusiastic welcome and for taking the time
to tell me all about Makelanrinne

Thank you Maija Prokofiev for your interest in the NMR and for arranging the NMR presentation at your school.

Finally, thank you students - friends - of Makelanrinne.  Your  questions and comments revealed more than an interest in the New Millennium Ride:  they seemed clearly motivated by a quest for adventure and a desire to do great things.  You have inspired me.
